The Saga of Swiss Decompression Science
The Quest for the Perfect Algorithm traces the work of Dr. Albert A. Bühlmann, whose research laid the foundations of modern decompression theory. Featuring former members of his research team, Thomas Bühlmann, and Prof. Alessandro Marroni, the 36min film connects original experiments with today’s practices—showing how these models continue to shape dive planning, risk management, and the limits of human exposure to pressure.

For recreational and technical divers, it is a return to first principles—and a reminder that every dive profile rests on decades of disciplined inquiry.
Dr. Albert A. Bühlmann

Dr. Albert A. Bühlmann (1923–1994) was a Swiss physician and pioneering researcher in decompression science at the University Hospital of Zurich. His work on inert gas kinetics and tissue compartment modeling led to the development of the Bühlmann decompression algorithms, which remain the foundation of modern dive planning and are widely implemented in dive computers today. Through decades of rigorous experimentation in hyperbaric chambers and real-world conditions, he transformed decompression from empirical practice into a structured scientific discipline.
Prof. Alessandro Marroni

Prof. Alessandro Marroni is a physician, researcher, and founder of DAN Europe, one of the world’s leading organizations dedicated to diving safety and medical research. A key figure in the advancement of diving medicine, he has led extensive studies on diver physiology, risk prevention, and decompression practices. In recent years, his work has focused on developing the ideal decompression algorithm—building on and extending the legacy of Dr. Albert A. Bühlmann to further refine personalized and data-driven approaches to diving safety.
